Synopsis:
Climbing to the top of the social ladder is hard---falling down from it is even harder. Regina Afton used to be a member of the Fearsome Fivesome, an all-girl clique both feared and revered by the students at Hallowell High... until vicious rumors about her and her best friend's boyfriend start going around. Now Regina's been "frozen out" and her ex-best friends are out for revenge. If Regina was guilty, it would be one thing, but the rumors are far from the terrifying truth and the bullying is getting more intense by the day. She takes solace in the company of Michael Hayden, a misfit with a tragic past, who she herself used to bully. Friendship doesn't come easily for these onetime enemies, and as Regina works hard to make amends for her past, she realizes Michael could be more than just a friend... if threats from the Fearsome Fivesome don't break them both first. Tensions grow and the abuse worsens as the final days of senior year march toward an explosive conclusion in this dark new tale from the author of Cracked Up To Be.
Thoughts:
4/5 stars.
This book really shows how catty and bitchy girls can be, with really spectacular writing. Courtney Summers weaves a story that compels you from starts to finish. It's pretty much about this popular chick Regina who gets falsely accused of having sex with her best friend Anna's boyfriend, who in reality almost raped her. Having no one believe her, she is left alone to brood in the sadness that becomes her life and try to stay strong as her used to be friends pull cruel tricks on her.
First of all, Regina isn't as innocent as she seems. She was once one of the popular girls who played the harmful pranks on other students, but even with this knowledge, you still can't help but feel sorry for her. I mean, her ex-best friends are freaking attacking her! But she does find solace in Michael, a boy who has an equally-broody life.
I actually liked Michael. He told Regina the truth in her wrongdoings and didn't stand for any of her crap. I also felt that Regina had many times to fess up to an adult, who could of actually done something. It didn't seem like she had a terrible home life, where her parents were hitting her left an right. And I couldn't help but see the teachers lack of authority. But that is reality, clueless teachers. That is why we students can't just sit there and ignore what we see happening. One person can make a difference.
Give this book some time, you won't regret it.
