That Good ol' Nataly's Review: The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han.

Synopsis:
Belly's never been the kind of girl that things happen to. Year after year, she's spent her summers at the beach house with Conrad and Jeremiah. The boys never noticed Belly noticing them. And every summer she hoped it would be different. This time, it was. But the summer Belly turned pretty was the summer that changed everything. For better or for worse.
Thoughts:
3/5 stars.
I had pretty mixed feelings about this book. There were some moments I sort of just wanted to slap Belly, which was actually a pretty cute nick-name for Isabel, and make her realize how needy and stupid she was being. Really. But reading this made me really want to go to Cousin's Beach, or any beach for that matter. I actually said that for Twenty Boy Summer so maybe I just like any beach.
Conrad. Conrad, Conrad, Conrad. I really didn't see the appeal in him. He was arrogant, snobbish, and ignored Belly left and right. And what was even more annoying was how Belly was throwing herself at him even though he was giving her the "get away from me" vibes. Pathetic. And also, was it me, or was she acting like a total bitch to her mom?
There were some characters I liked. Laurel and Susannah were the mom duo you practically wanted. Laurel was the more strict, protective mother while Susannah was the mother you could go to about all your boy problems. It jut dawned on me that I am making them sound like a lesbian couple. Ha, their not. And I did like Belly's brother, Steven. Maybe it's the side of me thats never had a sibling, but I really liked him.
The writing was the type that made you want to keep reading the story. I don't know how, but Jenny Han's writing cooped me up in my room just because I couldn't put the dang book down. The story also went back in time all the way to when she was 8 years old. I think. But it was to show the different relationships between Belly and the Fisher boys and how they develop over time. Was that a run-on sentence there?
Nonetheless, I will be picking up the second and third book to see how these relationships pan out.
